St Eugene's Primary School, Derry

History

St Eugene’s Primary School is a Catholic school etched in history and located in the very heart of Derry City. The school is named after the focal point of the Derry diocese, St. Eugene’s Cathedral, whose beautiful grounds our senior school lays within.

The school started life in 1854, constructed by architect E.J Toye as a convent for girls and has grade B listed status. The building became an education facility under the tutelage of the ‘Sisters of Mercy’ thanks to their dedication and the funding of local families. The school grew over the years and as a result a second infant site was built in 1914 to alleviate the congestion experienced by an oversubscribed senior school.

In 1991 the two sites came together by amalgamating the St. Eugene’s Infant School and the St. Eugene’s Convent Senior School to form St. Eugene’s Primary School. Currently the school uses both buildings to house Foundation on one side and Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils on the other. Throughout the years St. Eugene’s PS. has established great links in the local community and produced many fine students. A tradition that continues yearly. Among the school’s well known past pupils are the late, Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, veteran campaigner and politician Eamonn McCann, UTV journalist Mark McFadden, Ex Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey and the late BBC presenter Gerry Anderson.

At present the Infant school built in 1914 houses Year 1 and Year 2 classes, their lunchroom and the computer suite along with the Secretary’s and Principal’s offices. The Senior school built in 1854 houses Year 3 – Year 7 classes, their lunchroom, Numeracy, Literacy and World Around Us resource rooms, our school library and the assembly hall.

In 2000 the school expanded further with the addition of our onsite Nursery Unit, which lies in the school grounds. Most recently Ms Teresa Duggan has taken over as principal in 2019 with an aim to achieve high standards of teaching and learning throughout the whole school for every child.
